Write a press release
A practical advice on when to launch your MVP
“Write a press release” said Tony Fadell (The father of iPod), “Write it when you start building, not when you finish.”
Turns out there is a more practical or measurable approach to when the founder should launch their MVP (Minimum viable product). I came across this today, and I think it is a better advice than: ‘Just go ahead and launch it already’.
To write a good press release, you have to focus, on how to get journalists interested in what you are making, and to catch people’s attention (hook). It has to be succinct and interesting, and highlight the most essential things that your product can do, so that you can say “This, this is what is newsworthy, this is what really matters”.
Then think, if you launch right now, could you more or less send that press release into the world and have it be mostly true? If yes, then your product is probably ready, you have achieved the core of your vision.

p/s: Taken from Tony Fadell’s book ‘Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making’, you can find my view on his other points and a book summary written here.
It’s a great book, beyond visionary leaders like Steve Job / Jeff Bezos / Elon Musk, Tony Fadell offers more practical, for do-er advices & practical approaches that help turn the grand vision into reality.
