The rise of bite-sized content. What has changed and what hasn’t?

Back then we must wait for a piece of information, or a decision through a landline call, or a letter that could take days. For business meet up, if you manage to reach that person, are usually scheduled a few days or a week later. Now we have Email, or Whatsapp, or Video Call.

Development in communication technology has made it so the individual has much more tasks and people to attend to within a day or a week. Those things kept running in the subconscious mind, causing stress, and affecting our energy level with or without us knowing.

Perhaps our brain capacity is insufficient to handle too many long conversations or complex thoughts simultaneously in our daily life. Thus, we started seeing people in need of ‘recharge sessions’ (as known as laying at home for the whole day and doing nothing). Most of us watch bite-size videos while we are resting physically / emotionally. Most bite-size content gives people the illusion of learning something, or having seen something interesting — both providing the dopamine (a feel-good hormone) that usually doesn’t last very long.

Besides, most people seek recognition, belongings, and fame (become a likeable person). People gain sense of belongings by creating or participating in something well-received. Instagram, TikTok (and many others) become a wonderful place to gain recognition (likes), or engage with the post (to belong to something), for creators and audiences.

What we wanted hasn’t changed (recognition, belongings, fame), it could be it is easier to do a dance, beautiful pose or scenery, clip somebody’s motivational speech, and 1-minute craft via mobile app, as compared to investing years in writing a book, becoming a doctor or astronaut, or publishing academic research on Science Magazine.
